RedCanary

Drawing inspiration from the concept of “Miner’s Canary” and extending it, RedCanary is SigmaStream’s product aimed at automated monitoring of system health parameters towards effective preventive and corrective maintenance. 

With data analytics and artificial intelligence dominating product ecosystem, a whole set of challenges like capture, storage, analysis, data curation, search, sharing, transfer, visualization and many more is unleashed.  In particular, success of collection, transfer and distribution of high frequency data from the very source to the required destination depends on the basic building blocks like operating system, network and peripheral devices and sensors. There are many instances where precious time has been spent debugging upstream application programs whereas underlying cause was network connectivity or similar issue. Besides this, performance of downstream applications like analytics engine or visualizer is affected by the availability of resources like memory, disk space utilization, CPU usage, etc. 

Hence, it is crucial to have a sentinel to monitor the health of the system for effective streaming of data, transportation and performance of running products. RedCanary is the solution here, working at all levels to monitor a wide range of parameters.  RedCanary can work as an independent product to ensure the optimal performance by the system, however its strength lies in integrating seamlessly with other SigmaStream products to build upon and utilize their specific functionalities for providing a smooth user experience.

Monitors in RedCanary

  • Business Asset Monitors – Pre-packaged monitors by SigmaStream to monitor the status of different business assets included in the hierarchy. The assets to be monitoreddiffer based on the industry sector. For example, in oil and gas industry, well and wellbore are important business asset. Specialized monitors, in this case, are multi-well active, Wellbore start. Devices and channels are the lowest in hierarchy and monitors are in place to check events for interruption in service as well as quality of streamed data.
  • System Health Monitors - Pre-packaged monitors by SigmaStream to monitor to keep an eye on system performance parameters like Memory usage, disk space utilization, CPU utilization, etc. These monitors work across different operating systems and hardware.
  • Custom built monitors - RedCanary Agent Application Programming Interface (API) enables definition and integration of customized monitors.

Cluster-ready Server

The RedCanary server is cluster ready. High Availability (HA) is particularly important when one needs to ensure the overall health of the system and failure of the monitoring server itself is not an option.

Management Console

Management Console is a web-based management tool that administrators can login to view and update all the agents that are attached to the server.  By integrating with LDAP servers such as Microsoft Active Directory, administrators can exercise control on data exposure at a monitor level or at a predefined roll-up report level.

Reports

RedCanary supports reports generation that can be used to identify faulty devices, low quality software/firmware/hardware products and under provisioning of compute resources.

Actions

This feature allows RedCanary to initiate self-healing procedures and automate, when possible, a preemption of a potentially catastrophic failure.

Notifications

RedCanary, like many monitoring solutions in the market, notifies via email and SMS. The escalation mechanism where event notifications are moved up the chain of responsibility is a differentiator.

Distributed Architecture

RedCanary agents can run anywhere within the network as long as they have a line of sight to the RedCanary Server cluster. All the heavy lifting of the monitoring is done by the agents while the notifications and action dispatches are handled by the server.
